With camera work provided by Dr Ivan Polunin and directed by Tony Beamish for the British Broadcasting Corporation, Sails off Singapore (1958) is a rare colour film of colonial Singapore, without a soundtrack. Filmed with 16mm colour film, it is part of an extensive archive of documentary footage of Singapore shot during the 1950s to 1970s.
This film is presented courtesy of the Ivan Polunin Collection, an accumulation of a lifetime’s interests in hundreds of hours of film and video and over 40,000 still photographs, capturing places, people and everyday life in Singapore and Malaya.
The screening is organised in conjunction with “There are too many episodes of people coming here…”, an exhibition that examines particular sites around Singapore and the currency of their histories. The screening will be followed by a commentary by Dr Kevin YL Tan about how the film may be read in relation to history and heritage in Singapore today.

About Ivan Polunin
Arriving in Singapore from England in 1948, Dr Ivan Polunin (1920-2010) taught Social Medicine and Public Health at the then University of Malaya. In an adventurous career that began with filmic documentations of tropical diseases, Dr Polunin’s ethnographies soon grew to encompass hundreds of hours of film footage on Malaya’s eclectic sociocultural practices and its rich biodiversity.
About the speaker
Dr Kevin YL Tan LLB (Hons); LLM, JSD (Yale) is currently Adjunct Professor at the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore as well as at the S Rajaratnam School of International Studies, Nanyang Technological University. Kevin specializes in constitutional law, the Singapore legal system, international human rights, and legal history. In 2000, he founded Equilibrium Consulting Pte Ltd, a boutique consultancy focused on history, heritage and publishing. He is active in many civic organizations including the Singapore Heritage Society, the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), Singapore, and the Foundation for the Development of International Law in Asia (DILA).
