Set in the latter years of East Germany’s existence, Good Bye Lenin! is a tragicomedy that follows Alex Kerner. When Alex is arrested for participating in an anti-government demonstration, his mother, a staunch socialist, suffers a heart attack and falls into a coma. When she awakes months later, the Berlin Wall had fallen, and Germany was on the verge of reunification. To prevent his now fragile mother from learning of another shock that could kill her, Alex creates an alternate universe in his apartment where the Wall never fell and the East Germany his mother knew still existed.
Good Bye Lenin! provides an opening to broach issues of Cold War division and bipolarity, but it also prompts imagination into the possibilities and potentials of reunification, and even reconciliation, after belligerence.
This screening is organised in conjunction with the exhibitions “Who wants to remember a war?” and LINES: War Drawings and Posters from the Ambassador Dato’ N. Parameswaran Collection, which features posters, woodcuts and drawings from the French phase of the Indochina war of resistance against the Americans, and drawings and sketches of life and people at the frontlines.
