Who wants to remember what war? Alternate visions of conflict in Vietnam

Popular memories of the war in Vietnam are dominated by the propaganda art that is the subject of the current exhibition, <“Who wants to remember a war?”>. The art represents the conflict in Vietnam simply as a war of national liberation from American imperialism. Yet the conflict was complex, and there are other wars to be remembered. The talk juxtaposes images from the exhibition with alternate visions from film and contemporary documentary coverage. The result is to recapture some of the complexities of one of the pivotal conflicts of the twentieth century.

This talk is organised in conjunction with the exhibitions <“Who wants to remember a war?”> and <LINES: War Drawings and Posters from the Ambassador Dato’ N. Parameswaran Collection>, which features posters, woodcuts and drawings from the French phase of the Indochina war of resistance against the Americans, and drawings and sketches of life and people at the frontlines.

About the speakerAssistant Professor Gerard Sasges is a historian of modern Vietnam. He lived in Vietnam from 2000 to 2012, when he joined the NUS Department of Southeast Asian Studies. His work includes a collection of interviews, It's a Living: Work and Life in Vietnam Today (NUS Press, 2013), and a study of Indochina under colonial rule entitled Imperial intoxication: Alcohol and the making of colonial Indochina (University of Hawaii Press, 2017).
