The ‘Vietnam War’ was in many respects a war among three different Vietnams represented by three different flags. This talk will look at the various forces involved and how each of them perceived themselves, their enemies, and their war, in order to explain the conflict as much as possible through Vietnamese eyes.

This talk is organised in conjunction with the exhibition <Vietnam 1954-1975: War Drawings and Posters from the Ambassador Dato’ N. Parameswaran Collection>, featuring posters, woodcuts and drawings from the French phase of the Indochina war of resistance against the Americans, and drawings and sketches of life and people at the frontlines.

About the speaker
Associate Professor Bruce Lockhart has been studying the language, culture, and history of Vietnam for more than forty years. He grew up within the Vietnamese refugee community in the US and then spent three years as a university lecturer in Hanoi. He has been teaching at NUS for nearly eighteen years.
