FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT INTERNSHIPS
1. About Eligibility
Are non-NUS students, graduate-level students eligible to apply for the internship programme?
Yes! We welcome applications from undergraduate and graduate students from all institutions.
Are non-Singaporean/PR students eligible to apply for the internship programme?
Yes! We welcome applications from non-Singaporeans/PR students. For foreign students studying in overseas institutions, please note that we do not provide any further support beyond the stated internship stipend. You are also responsible for ensuring that you are eligible to work in Singapore, for more information, please refer to the Ministry of Manpower's website - http://www.mom.gov.sg/Pages/default.aspx
Are tertiary students (junior college, polytechnic) eligible to apply for the internship programme?
The internship programme is pitched at the undergraduate level and it is not advisable for post-tertiary students to apply.
Can I apply if my vacation period / period of availability is different from the official internship period?
Yes, we are open to discussing the internship period if your university’s vacation period or period of availability differs from the official internship. We prefer that interns are able to commit for at least ten weeks for an accumulative experience. Please state your preferred duration in the appropriate section of the application form.
Can I apply if I have holiday plans / summer programmes / other commitments during the internship period?
Yes, as long the disruption is minimal to the overall duration. You may request/discuss for days off with your internship supervisor. Please state your preferred duration or periods of unavailability in the appropriate section of the application form.
Do I need to have an art/museum-related academic background to apply?
No, we welcome students from all academic backgrounds to apply. However, make sure you demonstrate interest and capability for the positions you are applying for! Do note that some positions may ask for familiarity in certain topics.
2. About the Application Process
Can I apply for more than 1 position?
Yes. But please ensure that you meet the requirements for each position and are able to demonstrate interest and capability for the various positions you apply for.
What should I submit for my essay / writing sample?
You may choose to submit any recently written essay or writing sample. We want to see how you write and how you think! There is no restriction to the content or length of your written piece. Helpful hint: Select an essay / writing sample that is advantageous to the position that you are applying for.
Will I be notified if I am shortlisted?
No. We regret to say that with the high volume of applications we receive, we will only be able to inform shortlisted applicants.
3. About the Selection Process
What happens when I am shortlisted?
You will be contacted for a short interview with NUS Museum staff. After all the interviews are completed, the results will be made known to shortlisted candidates.
Is it possible to have a telephone or Skype interview?
Yes, if you are located outside of Singapore during the period of the internship interviews. We will work with you to schedule a suitable time.
4. About the Internship Programme
What are the working hours for an intern?
All the internship positions are listed are full-time positions (unless otherwise stated) that will require the intern to work in the museum office from Mondays-Fridays, 9.30am – 6pm for maximum immersion into the daily life of a museum practitioner! Interns may also be asked to assist in museum events that take place after office hours or on the weekends.
