This September, NUS Baba House celebrates it's 5th Anniversary with an International Conference that examines the progress in research on Peranakan Chinese in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia.
This follows the inaugural conference in May 2009 organised by the NUS Baba House, Chinese Heritage Centre and the National Library Board which discussed the recent developments in the study of Peranakan Chinese in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. A book was also published in 2010, based on the papers presented at the conference.
The 2013 conference continues the discussion and examines further progress in research on Peranakan Chinese in these three countries, focusing on how the communities have evolved or changed in response to decolonization and globalization. The conference has four sub-themes:
- Peranakan Politics and Decolonization
- Peranakan Literature: Past and Present
- Peranakan Business: Past and Present
- Peranakan Communities and Globalization
Speakers include Dr Kwa Chong Guan (S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore), Dr Leo Suryadinata (Chinese Heritage Centre, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore) and Dr Kenson Kwok (Founding Direction, Asian Civilisation Museums and Peranakan Museum, Singapore),
Co-organised by the NUS Baba House and Chinese Heritage Centre.
